It’s Sunday morning and the whole family is looking forward to a delicious breakfast. We did not want to eat the usual. After (intensely) staring at the pantry for a minute, an idea strikes and so was born the almond-oat savory waffle.

These crunchy-on-the-outside and soft-on-the-inside waffles burst with flavors when you eat them. They are completely gluten-free and keep you satiated till your next meal.

Plus, they take only 5 minutes to prepare and a few minutes to cook. Here’s how it is done –

Start by adding almond flour, rolled oats (gluten-free) and arrowroot starch to a bowl. Give it a quick mix before adding other ingredients. Now let’s add in all the flavor components and seasonings.

Finally, add nutritional yeast (vegan-friendly) for that cheesy flavor, some sesame seeds for texture and just enough water to get a pouring consistency. Give it a quick mix and pour away!

Nutritional yeast does not have any active or live yeast cells. It is specifically grown for food purposes and contains all the essential amino acids making it a complete protein.

If not vegan, you can use parmesan cheese instead of nutritional yeast. I have tried this version too and it as amazing as its vegan counterpart.

Here are some of the amazing benefits that you get out of these gluten-free, vegan savory pancakes –

  • Fiber and gut-friendly Prebiotics from Oats
  • Antioxidants from Almond Flour
  • Protein from Nutritional Yeast

Pair these waffles with sautéed vegetables or a side salad and a non-dairy yogurt sour cream (with onion salt for that sour cream and oniony flavor). If you are in to dairy, Greek yogurt with a little bit of onion salt is your best bet.

These were a hit at my house. I hope you enjoy them too. Let’s get started!

  • ½ cup Almond Flour
  • ½ cup Oats rolled
  • 3 tbsp Arrowroot Starch
  • ½ tsp Onion Powder
  • ½ tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Oregano dried
  • ½ tsp Paprika
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 1 tbsp Sesame Seeds
  • 4 tbsp Nutritional Yeast
  • ¾ cup Water
  • ½ tsp Coconut Oil for greasing

Instructions

  • Add almond flour, oats and arrowroot starch to bowl and give it a quick mix.
  • Add onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, paprika, salt, sesame seeds, nutritional yeast and the required amount of water and mix well.
  • Once the batter is ready, pour it in to a waffle iron and cook for a few minutes.
  • Serve warm with a side salad or sautéed vegetables.
  • Top it with non-dairy yogurt sour cream, if you prefer.

Notes

  • Rolled oats gives a nice texture to the waffles but if you do not like it, add oat flour instead.
  • You can switch the oregano with the herb of your choice. Just remember that dry herbs are potent, so a little goes a long way.
  • Nutritional yeast gives a cheesy flavor to waffle. Replace with parmesan cheese if you can consume dairy. It will still be delicious.
  • A side of salad or vegetables makes it a complete meal.
